History

Peace Week Delaware was founded in 2016 by members of the Movement for a Culture of Peace, a diverse coalition of individuals and organizations concerned about violence in Delaware. Advocates for peace and justice saw the need for collective action by dozens of sincere—but separate—community groups, faith organizations, and established nonprofits such as Pacem in Terris, Delaware Center for Justice, the YWCA, and the Delaware Coalition Against Gun Violence. The first Peace Week had 41 events across all three counties of Delaware.

From the beginning, Peace Week has encouraged collaboration among many different groups with the aim of connecting event organizers for justice-seeking and nonviolent action. Each successful Peace Week provides a forum for communication and cooperation among peace-oriented organizations across Delaware. Our wide range of events and activities involve not only people already engaged in peace activities but those seeking a way to become involved, thus widening the circle of nonviolent action across the state.

We hope you will be part of creating peace this year and beyond. We have an opportunity to declare our desire for peace and our ideas for achieving it—and we can make a greater difference if we act together as one Delaware
