Rethinking Treaty of Friendship

  • Location: New Castle Court House Museum
211 Delaware St, New Castle , Delaware, 19720
  • Organization(s): Delaware Historical and Cultural Affairs(HCA)

William Penn’s meeting with Lenni Lenape tribal leaders in 1682 at Shackamaxon was, according to Voltaire, the “only treaty never sworn to and never broken.” No written treaty survives, yet early references abound and Lenape oral history supports the evidence. Speaker Penny Dwyer will explain how a fascination with the story of the Treaty of Friendship evolved over centuries and manifested in relics, works of art and commercialism.

Penny Dwyer is Curator at the Penn Treaty Museum, Philadelphia.

Draw the Circle Wider: Depolarizing as Spiritual Discipline & Democratic Imperative

  • Location: First Unitarian Church of Wilmington
730 Halstead Rd., Wilmington, DE, 19803
  • Organization(s): Arlington Street Church in Boston, MA

In America, we have become increasingly polarized in our political views and ever more distrustful of our fellow citizens. What can help us repair this breach and foster a sense of civic renewal, even in the midst of a high-stakes election cycle?
In this half-day workshop, spiritual director and community minister Kelly Murphy Mason will explore the dynamics of deepened national division and introduce some individual and collective practices for depolarizing various encounters and enhancing goodwill among us, expanding on her experiences with the Georgetown University Berkley Center and Braver Angels, a national bi-partisan organization.
Together, we’ll explore what makes it so difficult for us to agree to disagree these days, how we can exit the assorted echo chambers we inhabit, and what might inspire us to put greater trust in the democratic process — and in one another.

Banned Together, the Fight Against Censorship

  • Location: Woodlawn Library
    2020 W 9th St, Wilmington, De, 19805
  • Organization(s): Woodlawn Library

Watch this private, pre-release screening of documentary. A diverse cast of visionary teenagers, intriguing characters, stirring public protests, private threats, criminal charges, and profanity-laced school board meetings: this is the world of the explosive new feature documentary, Banned Together.

Banned Together pulls back the curtain on two of the most controversial issues in America today: book bans and curriculum censorship in public schools.

Banned Together follows three young women during their senior year of high school as they fight hostile community members and school board officials to reinstate these banned books. We witness their evolution from local to national activists as they advocate at school board meetings, sit down with national politicians, famous authors and constitutional scholars, and ultimately, speak on stage at the Right to Read Rally during the American Library Association’s annual conference in Chicago.

As we follow their activist journey, Banned Together illuminates the radical political forces vying for control of public education and the nationwide resistance to their efforts.

Stay for the conversation with the film’s producers.

Common Ground

  • Location: UUs of Southern DE
    30486 Lewes-Georgetown Hwy, Lewes, DE, 19958
  • Organization(s): DE Interfaith Power and Light

“Common Ground” unveils a dark web of money, power, and politics behind our broken food system. The film reveals how unjust practices forged our current farm system in which farmers of all colors are literally dying to feed us. The film profiles a hopeful and uplifting movement of white, black, and indigenous farmers who are using alternative “regenerative” models of agriculture that could balance the climate, save our health, and stabilize America’s economy – before it’s too late.
