Children’s Peace Art Exhibition
What does peace look like? What does a peaceful world look like? A children’s art exhibit for students in grades K-12. Exhibition continues through Sunday, Sept. 25, and is available for other venues. Conceived as a dialogue between our youth and us older citizens, the exhibit features images and words describing the world our youth want. What will our response to their vision be?

Peace & the Spoken Word
Stories can be central to peacemaking. Brief narrative readings—all spoken aloud—will present the ideas and experiences of great thinkers and writers on equity, dispelling conflict, and making peace. During these participatory readings, audience members will be invited to read out selected passages. Come share an encounter with powerful and compassionate ideas that are relevant for our times. Learn to Fold a Paper Crane: Symbol of Peace
Appoquinimink Library is hosting a peace themed event: Learn how to fold an origami paper crane — an international symbol of peace — and help us reach our goal of 1,000 peace cranes to hang in the library. Children are invited to join us for story time and listen to the tale of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes — the real-life story that inspired a global peace movement. The library will also have a book display focusing on past Nobel Peace Prize winners and other peace-related literature.

Transforming Anger and Violence Through the Alternatives to Violence Project
A 2-hour introductory workshop will explore techniques and strategies used by the the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) to reduce violence in both prison and community settings. The goal is to inform and inspire local groups to see ways to utilize elements of this highly successful, evidence-based program for their own communities and institutions. (A full-length AVP basic workshop will be held Sept. 30–Oct. 2 at First Unitarian Church.)

Requiem for the Dead:
American Spring 2014
More than 32,000 people die from gun violence every year in America, an average of 88 people per day. This HBO documentary highlights a few of the estimated 8,000 individuals who died from gunfire in spring 2014, drawing exclusively on found media—news accounts, police investigations and social media—to shine a light on little-known stories of tragic loss, bringing the victims to life in their own words and images. The screening will be followed by a discussion about the impact of gun violence on our community, exploring the cost, the loss, and how we might help change the narrative.

A love-filled interfaith evening featuring John Dear, legendary peace activist, Catholic priest, and co-founder of Campaign Nonviolence. “John Dear is the embodiment of a peacemaker,” Archbishop Desmond Tutu wrote a few years ago when he nominated John for the Nobel Peace Prize. “He has led by example through his actions and in his writings and in numerous sermons, speeches and demonstrations. He believes that peace is not something static, but rather to make peace is to be engaged, mind, body and spirit. His teaching is to love yourself, to love your neighbor, your enemy, and to love the world and to understand the profound responsibility in doing all of these.” Join together to make a commitment to nonviolent action for peace in Delaware.

II. The Bonhoeffers
Today’s readings are from the lives of Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906–1945) and his family. Bonhoeffer, a Lutheran German theologian, was imprisoned and executed by the Nazis at the end of World War II. Come meet him and his accomplished family as we read their writings and correspondence, including letters from his visit to Philadelphia, addresses to American congregations between the world wars, his attempts to meet Gandhi, and most importantly, his moral testimony during the Nazi years.

An evening of peace-filled activities, beginning with a ukulele workshop at 6:00 pm. Learn how to play “Go Now in Peace” on the ukulele with award-winning folk duo, Simple Gifts. No experience necessary. Participants will play the piece during the duo’s concert at 7:00 pm. At 8:00 pm, join comedian and life coach Belinda Criddell for an interactive workshop about how prejudging stifles who we are and who we can become. This is our third annual March for a Culture of Peace.

A special Selichot (Penitential) service anticipating Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, featuring singer-songwriter Avi Wisnia, who will explore his grandfather’s experience in the Holocaust, his own visits to the concentration camps, and what that means for us today as we pursue peace and justice. Faithful to Peace:
An Interfaith Conversation
Representatives from twelve different faith traditions will lead conversations about peacemaking through their sacred texts, communities, traditions, and experiences. Each participant will be able to choose two small group discussions. The event will open with a short interfaith devotional service and include a time of fellowship and refreshments before and during a break in the middle.

Prevention Concert in Rodney Square
Please join us for a day of prevention and awareness. Brandywine Counseling & Community Services, along with the Delaware Coalition Against Gun Violence, will be hosting a day filled with family activities including games, moon bounce and inflatable slide, performances by local artists and local community organizations. We are proud that this event is a part of the Concert Across America to End Gun Violence and Peace Week Delaware. The Prevention Concert will feature the following:

Peace & the Spoken Word
Stories can be central to peacemaking. Brief narrative readings—all spoken aloud—will present the ideas and experiences of great thinkers and writers on equity, dispelling conflict, and making peace. During these participatory readings, audience members will be invited to read out selected passages. Come share an encounter with powerful and compassionate ideas that are relevant for our times. Four events: Sept. 18, 22, 24, 25. Attend any or all.
IV. Women and Voices from Partition of the Indian Subcontinent
The violent division of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan in 1947, which uprooted millions of people, has been recorded in history, literature and cinema. We will read excerpts from Amrita Pritam and other women writers on the partition and its effect on women’s lives. In addition, we will hear other accounts of the region—among them accounts of Dr, Howard Thurman’s meeting with Gandhi and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s life in India and New York.
