But what, exactly, does it mean to be “housing insecure? Speakers include University of Delaware Professor Dr. Ann Aviles, and Community Legal Aid Society, Inc. Housing Attorney Gilberte Pierre. Labyrinth Meditation: Walking Towards Racial Justice
Walking the labyrinth reminds us that we are all becoming, as individuals and as a community. The path awakens us to the work we still need to do, encourages us to tend to our journey with compassion and courage, and calls us to live with greater awareness and purpose. We will start our journey in a circle with Charito Calvachi-Mateyko, Co-Chair of the Delaware Hispanic Commission, http://charitocalvachi.com/node/1, guiding us into a walking meditation, to acknowledge the countless lives lost to racism, to rest and reenter our courage and hope, and to renew our commitment to doing the work of racial justice. We will each privately set an intention for our walk. This can be a change we desire in ourselves or in our world, or we may want to dedicate our walk to a person or purpose. As we exit the labyrinth, we will rejoin in the circle with Charito guiding us in sharing hopes for what we will carry into the world. This is an in-person program and will follow COVID spacing and other guidelines. Following registration additional information will be sent via email. What can happen when a teacher reads your Tweets: First Amendment discussion with the Delaware American Constitution Society.
Peace cannot exist without the rule of law, and the free speech protection of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution is a critical rule of law for the peaceful operation of a democracy. Student speech inside and outside the classroom is protected against government interference by the First Amendment. However, this protection has limits and students are often disciplined for their speech, including speech on social media. During this zoom forum sponsored by the Delaware Chapter of the American Constitution Society, lawyers, educators, and advocates will discuss how the limits of student free speech protection for social media speech are balanced against the right of schools to discipline students to maintain a safe school environment for all students and teachers. Participants are encouraged to bring their questions and points of view. Lawyers, students, teachers, and school administrators are encouraged to attend. |

Practicing the Art and Soul of Peacebuilding with Rev. Dr. Larry Peers
During this global pandemic, many of us developed capacities for innovating that we never knew we had. We changed much of what we ordinarily do at work, in our religious institutions, at home, and in our daily lives. Can we also find ways to tap into our imaginations in order to innovate for the sake of building peace? What are the perspectives and practices in the art and the soul of building peace in the various contexts of our life, communities, and world? Rev. Dr. Larry Peers began as the minister of First Unitarian Church of Wilmington in August. In addition to ministry, he has worked with organizations and their leaders across many faith traditions in the areas of change and conflict transformation as a former senior consultant with the Alban Institute and a director of the Pastoral Excellence Network. He has taught courses in adaptive leadership and conflict transformation at seminaries and will be a guest lecturer next spring in an interreligious program in International Peacebuilding at Hartford Seminary. For this event we are pleased to share that you can join us either at the church or virtually. Once you register we will reach out with information for both options and you can share with us your preference. If you are considering joining us at the church please know that we are following all COVID spacing and other guidelines. Becoming Visible – Through Teaching AANHPI History
“Education is the tool for creating a more humane and compassionate society.” Abby Weiss, Facing History Over the past two years, increased incidents of violence against Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific islanders (AANHPI) are reminders of the group’s vulnerability in our country. These events have impacted many in the AANHPI community, and each of us has the responsibility to be part of the solution. One solution is to teach Asian American history in schools to increase awareness and appreciation of the contributions and the struggles of Asian Americans in building our country. As of July 2022, nine states have statutes requiring AANHPI history curriculum in K-12 schools. Currently, Delaware has statutes requiring ethnic studies in the curriculum. In 2021, the state legislature passed a stand-alone bill requiring the teaching of Black History in schools. We need similar requirements for the inclusion of AANHPI history in the curriculum. For this Peace Week Delaware event, we bring together a panel consisting of community leaders, parents, students and educators. They will share their experience and perspectives of AANHPI history education in Delaware. We hope you will join us for an informative talk and discussion. Tigray, Ethiopia - the Unspoken Tragedy
Author of The Tigrayan Electrician Memories of Father and His Beloved Motherland, Issayas Yrgaw Bahta (aka Isaias Irgau), an Ethiopian refugee will speak on the events leading up to the killing of his father during the war in Ethiopia and his own escape to safety. Background
The peace treaty that had earned the Nobel Peace Prize just months earlier was, in fact, a war pact between Ethiopia’s and Eritrea’s Heads of State against Tigray and its regional government. The Nobel Institute had been spectacularly taken for a ride, and the people of Tigray found themselves at the receiving end of the most brutal war of the 21st century. A war that was the foundation of a two-year-long siege of the six million people of Tigray. The guns have fallen silent, but the wounds inflicted as a result of the siege and relentless onslaught on the people are anything but healed. The presentation will lay bare events leading to the war and its consequences from a deeply personal perspective. There will be an opportunity to purchase the book, and all proceeds will be donated to help people suffering in the region. https://www.tigrayanelectrician.com/ On-site registration will be available for those who chose not to book/register online. |

Riverside WRK Group Tour
The REACH Riverside Development Corporation was formed in 2017 to remove the barriers to prosperity and well-being facing residents of Wilmington’s Riverside neighborhood, one of Wilmington’s most impoverished communities. In 2018 REACH joined the Purpose Built Communities network and the WRK Group was formed. The WRK Group, a collaboration of three nonprofits working toward the goal of a vibrant Riverside community, is implementing the Purpose Built Communities revitalization model, a holistic approach focused on mixed-income housing, education and health initiatives. The WRK Group leverages the unique assets and expertise of each organization: REACH as community quarterback, leading overall redevelopment strategy and providing administrative and back-office services; Kingswood as a trusted community hub for social service delivery; and The Warehouse as a safe place where teens explore, learn, and develop the skills needed to be successful in school, work, and life. You can get more information on the WRK website here. Tours start at The Warehouse (1121 Thatcher St in Wilmington) with a quick walkthrough, followed by a full presentation of the project by CEO Logan Herring. Then we jump into the REACH bus and tour the neighborhood, with stops at Kingswood Community Center and Imani Village to see the new housing. They take about 90 minutes. Peer Support for Returning Citizens
This event will feature the work of New Beginnings-Next Step (NBNS). This non-profit fights recidivism in Delaware by sponsoring weekly peer-support groups for incarcerated and returning citizens. Proving that people change primarily because of relationships, NBNS establishes a deep sense of kinship and trust with and among participating offenders while they are still in prison. These relationships continue long after NBNS members are released and help them build the resilience necessary to deal with the many daunting challenges of reentry successfully. NBNS Executive Director John Flynn, along with returning citizen members and volunteer facilitators, will share how NBNS helps to build an ever-growing community of compassion, hope, and possibility here in Delaware. As John is fond of saying, if we all stand with those in the margins, they won’t be margins anymore. They’ll just be the places where we’re all standing. NBNS was featured in an extensive cover story in the Delaware News Journal on September 22, 2022. See https://newbeginnings-nextstep.org for more information about NBNS. On-site registration will be available for those who choose not to book/register online. |

Active Bystander Training
Have you ever had a situation where you saw someone being harmed, physically or emotionally, and wanted to help, but you didn’t know what to do, or how to do it? As Jewish people, we have a moral imperative to pursue justice. Through Active Bystander Training, you can learn some of the situations (such as racism, antisemitism, sexual harassment, a crime being committed, and many more) that you are likely to encounter as a bystander and, more importantly, how you can intervene in a safe, productive way. We will examine the reasons why we may be reluctant to get involved and practice proven techniques for intervention. Practicing Peace Through Deep Listening
Could what Mark Nepo says about deep listening also be what we might say about practicing peace? Nepo writes: “I learned that listening this deeply is an act of creation that shapes us beyond our will…But I’m also discovering after all these years that listening deeply over time is one of uninterrupted growing — one continuous act.” Can we allow peace to be cultivated in us—as “one continuous act.” This service will take place in the sanctuary and live-streamed at www.firstuuwilm.org. It is one of First Unitarian’s offerings during Delaware Peace Week. Rev. Dr. Larry Peers began as the minister of First Unitarian Church of Wilmington in August 2021. In addition to ministry, he has worked with organizations and their leaders across many faith traditions in the areas of change and conflict transformation. Rev. Peers has taught courses in adaptive leadership and conflict transformation and “Peacemaking and Religious Leadership” at seminaries. |

GOTV PostCard Writing Party!
We will write postcards to “GET OUT THE VOTE”. YOU can DO SOMETHING, as Michelle Obama urged. A healthy democracy requires citizen involvement. We supply pens, snacks, cards, scripts, live music, stamps. We are given addresses in communities that have experienced attempts to marginalize, confuse, delist, disenfranchise voters. We cannot let that happen! The power is in YOUR hands so see this does not happen. The electoral college votes from some districts/states may come down to a handful of votes. Lots of research have gone into selecting districts that have the potential to swing the election. DO NOT be the one to say “I COULD HAVE made a difference.” The work starts NOW. Effort is sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), Unitarian Universalist Delaware Advocacy Network (UUDAN), and UUFN Endowment Committee which provided funds for stamps. |

Rethinking Treaty of Friendship
William Penn’s meeting with Lenni Lenape tribal leaders in 1682 at Shackamaxon was, according to Voltaire, the “only treaty never sworn to and never broken.” No written treaty survives, yet early references abound and Lenape oral history supports the evidence. Speaker Penny Dwyer will explain how a fascination with the story of the Treaty of Friendship evolved over centuries and manifested in relics, works of art and commercialism. Penny Dwyer is Curator at the Penn Treaty Museum, Philadelphia. |

Banned Together, the Fight Against Censorship
Watch this private, pre-release screening of documentary. A diverse cast of visionary teenagers, intriguing characters, stirring public protests, private threats, criminal charges, and profanity-laced school board meetings: this is the world of the explosive new feature documentary, Banned Together. Banned Together pulls back the curtain on two of the most controversial issues in America today: book bans and curriculum censorship in public schools. Banned Together follows three young women during their senior year of high school as they fight hostile community members and school board officials to reinstate these banned books. We witness their evolution from local to national activists as they advocate at school board meetings, sit down with national politicians, famous authors and constitutional scholars, and ultimately, speak on stage at the Right to Read Rally during the American Library Association’s annual conference in Chicago. As we follow their activist journey, Banned Together illuminates the radical political forces vying for control of public education and the nationwide resistance to their efforts. Stay for the conversation with the film’s producers. Register: https://delawarelibraries.libcal.com/event/13291326 |

Sovereignty in Undisturbable Peace
Dear Friends, I am so excited and honored for the opportunity to speak about the Sovereignty in Undisturbable Peace. Peace is often declared by an external source, but what does it really mean to us personally? To ground us in the present moment, I will begin with a meditation experience that will guide us into a peaceful, connected state. From there, I will lead us into a personal activity of soul writing to explore our own personal conceptions of Peace. This will lead us into my talk on the Practice of Undisturbable Peace in our daily lives. And, if time allows we can open the floor for sharing. With great Love and Gratitude, Anne Dushel Maring is a Karuna Reiki Master, NASM CPT/BCS, and owner of A.C.O.R.N. Fitness and Well-Being LLC. Her fundamental beliefs, foundation for teaching, and her energy practice rest upon 3 primary statements: I AM Sacred. I AM Divine. I AM Sovereign. From this foundation, each person as a Creation and a Creator in this Universe can call upon a treasure of energetic resources to empower their every day. Beautiful synchronicities unfold in our lives when we tap into our personal Divinity, Universal Life Force Energy, and the Wisdom of our own Sacred Heart. https://www.awakenedheart.net/sunday-services |

Join us for this peaceful, prayerful walk through the center of Wilmington to promote an end to racial and social injustice and to reduce gun violence in our city. We gather in the SsAM parking lot with people from various faith communities to share in this active, visible commitment to justice and peace. We walk in silence, ending at Rodney Square.
