Nineteen million households in America, including about 30 percent of all renters pay more than half of their monthly income on housing. This is a key factor in what the government now refers to as “housing insecurity” — a condition in which a person or family’s living situation is tentative, or how close the family might be to homelessness. But what, exactly, does it mean to be “housing insecure?

Speakers include University of Delaware Professor Dr. Ann Aviles, and Community Legal Aid Society, Inc. Housing Attorney Gilberte Pierre.  The event will conclude with breakout sessions, providing an opportunity to hear from our community and engage volunteers.

Labyrinth Meditation: Walking Towards Racial Justice

Walking the labyrinth reminds us that we are all becoming, as individuals and as a community. The path awakens us to the work we still need to do, encourages us to tend to our journey with compassion and courage, and calls us to live with greater awareness and purpose. We will start our journey in a circle with Charito Calvachi-Mateyko, Co-Chair of the Delaware Hispanic Commission, http://charitocalvachi.com/node/1, guiding us into a walking meditation, to acknowledge the countless lives lost to racism, to rest and reenter our courage and hope, and to renew our commitment to doing the work of racial justice. We will each privately set an intention for our walk. This can be a change we desire in ourselves or in our world, or we may want to dedicate our walk to a person or purpose. As we exit the labyrinth, we will rejoin in the circle with Charito guiding us in sharing hopes for what we will carry into the world.

This is an in-person program and will follow COVID spacing and other guidelines. Following registration additional information will be sent via email. Please note in the email you receive directions for parking as parking on the Arden Green is prohibited.

What can happen when a teacher reads your Tweets: First Amendment discussion with the Delaware American Constitution Society.

Peace cannot exist without the rule of law, and the free speech protection of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution is a critical rule of law for the peaceful operation of a democracy. Student speech inside and outside the classroom is protected against government interference by the First Amendment. However, this protection has limits and students are often disciplined for their speech, including speech on social media. During this zoom forum sponsored by the Delaware Chapter of the American Constitution Society, lawyers, educators, and advocates will discuss how the limits of student free speech protection for social media speech are balanced against the right of schools to discipline students to maintain a safe school environment for all students and teachers. Participants are encouraged to bring their questions and points of view. Lawyers, students, teachers, and school administrators are encouraged to attend.

Sharing Stories, Sharing Ourselves

We seek to foster dialogue across differences and inspire
people to get to know each other through sharing their
stories. Our ultimate goal is to empower people to be fully
who they are, while accepting and respecting others for
who they are. We ask, “Can we be truly respectful and
accepting of each other? And can we be patient with each
other as we struggle to know each other across our
differences?” We hope to help build a foundation that
program participants can use to create stronger
relationships between these two communities.

Film: Kiss the Ground with discussion to follow

During this programs, you will watch the film “Kiss the Ground,” then join a discussion with local members of Socially Responsible Agriculture.

About the film: Right now, soil might be the last thing on your mind. But in a moment when the future of our planet and humankind is at stake, nothing may be more important than regenerating the ground beneath us. We’re in need of a kind of hope we’ve never felt before. KISS THE GROUND, now out on Netflix, unveils a game-changer to our climate crisis: the Earth’s own soil.

We’re facing a lot of challenges right now — this film is creating a movement to solve one of our greatest challenges: balancing the climate and securing our future.

How about some good news for a change? Here it is: we can reverse global warming. The solution is called “Regenerative Agriculture” and this film presents the research, practice, and hope we need to move forward. Together.

People are calling KISS THE GROUND “The Most Important Film You’ll Ever Watch” — which is a really big claim. But it just may be true.
Regenerative Agriculture can: Revive farmer prosperity, reduce flooding & draught, replenish fresh water sources, reduce fire hazards, reverse global warming, recreate regional access to nutrient-dense food, reduce toxic pesticides & fertilizers, reduce dead zones & water pollution, reverse extinction, and reconnect humanity & nature.

During this global pandemic, many of us developed capacities for innovating that we never knew we had. We changed much of what we ordinarily do at work, in our religious institutions, at home, and in our daily lives. Can we also find ways to tap into our imaginations in order to innovate for the sake of building peace? What are the perspectives and practices in the art and the soul of building peace in the various contexts of our life, communities, and world?

Rev. Dr. Larry Peers began as the minister of First Unitarian Church of Wilmington in August. In addition to ministry, he has worked with organizations and their leaders across many faith traditions in the areas of change and conflict transformation as a former senior consultant with the Alban Institute and a director of the Pastoral Excellence Network. He has taught courses in adaptive leadership and conflict transformation at seminaries and will be a guest lecturer next spring in an interreligious program in International Peacebuilding at Hartford Seminary.

For this event we are pleased to share that you can join us either at the church or virtually. Once you register we will reach out with information for both options and you can share with us your preference. If you are considering joining us at the church please know that we are following all COVID spacing and other guidelines. Reverend Idola Batson will give a sermon on “The Peace is Missing.” It will draw from Scripture — hope for personal, social and institutional peace. The spoken word, prayers and music will constitute the service. She recommends Facebook Live for viewing the service.
Rev Batson states that “a recurring theme of sermons is often on accessing the peace of God and finding the path to peace in an anxious and hostile environment. Black preaching is distinctive in its approach because of the direct impact of racism and the struggle for equality that daily face the African American community.”

Positive Psychology Virtual Workshop - Roadmap to a Peaceful Life

Positive psychology is a new field of study based on decades of research into the components necessary to live a flourishing and peaceful life.  Through positive psychology you can find answers to the questions:  ‘What’s right with you? How can we build more of that? And, how do you stay aligned with peace while amidst ‘chaos’.  This free virtual workshop will offer you tools to  take back the reins of your life, manage your thoughts, shift your emotions, and inspire your actions.  We will identify simple tweaks to your schedule, outlook and habits that can lead to dramatic and measurable increases to your inner peace and well-being.

The Kinship Worldview and the Practice of Peacemaking

What might we learn from contemporary Indigenous leaders and the Indigenous worldviews about human survival and the well-being of future generations? What wisdom and precepts from this “kinship worldview” can nourish us and help guide us toward being peacemakers and being at peace. Children are invited to join their families for the first part of the service.

Rev. Dr. Larry Peers began as the minister of First Unitarian Church of Wilmington in August 2021. In addition to ministry, he has worked with organizations and their leaders across many faith traditions in the areas of change and conflict transformation as a former senior consultant with the Alban Institute and a director of the Pastoral Excellence Network. Rev. Peers has taught courses in adaptive leadership and conflict transformation at seminaries and was a guest lecturer last spring in an Inter-religious Program in International Peace-building at Hartford Seminary.

For this event we are pleased to share that you can join us either at the church or virtually.
Once you have registered we will reach out with information for both options.

Becoming Visible – Through Teaching AANHPI History

“Education is the tool for creating a more humane and compassionate society.” Abby Weiss, Facing History

Over the past two years, increased incidents of violence against Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific islanders (AANHPI) are reminders of the group’s vulnerability in our country. These events have impacted many in the AANHPI community, and each of us has the responsibility to be part of the solution.

One solution is to teach Asian American history in schools to increase awareness and appreciation of the contributions and the struggles of Asian Americans in building our country. As of July 2022, nine states have statutes requiring AANHPI history curriculum in K-12 schools. Currently, Delaware has statutes requiring ethnic studies in the curriculum. In 2021, the state legislature passed a stand-alone bill requiring the teaching of Black History in schools. We need similar requirements for the inclusion of AANHPI history in the curriculum.

For this Peace Week Delaware event, we bring together a panel consisting of community leaders, parents, students and educators. They will share their experience and perspectives of AANHPI history education in Delaware. We hope you will join us for an informative talk and discussion. Sorry.

In Scripture, the Prophet Micah teaches that we should do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with our God. But what does that really mean? How does that influence and effect our ability to create a world of non-violence within our communities, our families and ourselves? This diverse, interfaith panel discussion will explore these ideas in a dynamic, community-oriented conversation.

Positive Psychology Virtual Workshop-Roadmap to a Peaceful Life

Positive psychology is a new field of study based on decades of research into the components necessary to live a flourishing and peaceful life.  Through positive psychology you can find answers to the questions:  ‘What’s right with you? How can we build more of that? And, how do you stay aligned with peace while amidst ‘chaos’.  This free virtual workshop will offer you tools to  take back the reins of your life, manage your thoughts, shift your emotions, and inspire your actions.  We will identify simple tweaks to your schedule, outlook and habits that can lead to dramatic and measurable increases to your inner peace and well-being.

Depolarizing Within: A Braver Angels Workshop

Depolarizing Within: A Braver Angels Workshop

Depolarizing Within is designed to foster skills to help you lessen the effects of polarization when you encounter them in your political conversations. Note that by “polarization,” we are not referring to healthy disagreements over issues or philosophy. We are talking about how we regard and talk about large groups of ordinary people on the other side of the political aisle.

Take this workshop if you are interested in the following:

1. Becoming more aware of your inner polarizer and finding ways to counteract that impulse.
2. Learning to be critical without stereotyping, dismissing, ridiculing, or showing contempt.
3. Building skills for intervening constructively in social conversations that veer into contempt and ridicule for people with other political views.

Please reserve a space using the provided eventbrite link. On-site registration will be available for those who choose not to book/register online.

  • Location: Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark
420 Willa Rd, Newark, DE, 19711
  • Organization(s): Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark
  • Adult, Discussion, Human rights

Author of The Tigrayan Electrician Memories of Father and His Beloved Motherland, Issayas Yrgaw Bahta (aka Isaias Irgau), an Ethiopian refugee will speak on the events leading up to the killing of his father during the war in Ethiopia and his own escape to safety.

Background

  • On October 11, 2019, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize had been awarded to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for his efforts to make peace with neighboring Eritrea.
  • On December 10, 2019, while delivering his Nobel Lecture, the Ethiopian Premier said he accepted the award on behalf of his “partner and comrade in peace,” the President of Eritrea.
  • On November 4, 2020, 11 months after the Nobel Lecture, the Ethiopian premier and the Eritrean president coordinated a vicious military assault on the northern Ethiopian regional state of Tigray.

The peace treaty that had earned the Nobel Peace Prize just months earlier was, in fact, a war pact between Ethiopia’s and Eritrea’s Heads of State against Tigray and its regional government. The Nobel Institute had been spectacularly taken for a ride, and the people of Tigray found themselves at the receiving end of the most brutal war of the 21st century. A war that was the foundation of a two-year-long siege of the six million people of Tigray. The guns have fallen silent, but the wounds inflicted as a result of the siege and relentless onslaught on the people are anything but healed.

The presentation will lay bare events leading to the war and its consequences from a deeply personal perspective. There will be an opportunity to purchase the book, and all proceeds will be donated to help people suffering in the region.

An Act of Peace: Supporting Asylum-Seekers I

Come watch and discuss an important documentary called Seeking Asylum: A Mother’s Journey. This award-winning feature documentary shows the problems migrants face when petitioning for asylum in the United States. In a dismantled system designed for failure, we follow one woman’s journey as she searches for protection for herself and her kids. Most people seeking asylum are running from extreme violence in their home countries.

Unfortunately, many migrants view getting to the U.S. as the final hurdle in their journey, but the film shows that once in the U.S., the fight has just begun. During one of the most uncertain times in our country’s history, Seeking Asylum documents the challenges asylum seekers face and shows why asylum is an integral part of the American Dream that we cannot afford to lose. It is a courageous act of peace to support those who seek asylum in the U.S.

On-site registration will be available for those who chose not to book/register online. Refreshments will be provided.
We will discuss the film’s themes and ways to support our neighbors who are seeking asylum.

Restoring The Power of Community
It takes you and me. It takes you and me talking. It takes you and me listening. The world is poised for a C-change. Humanity faces the opportunity to stay (stuck, siloed, isolated) the same, or to change ( challenge paradigms, perspectives, seek connection). Let’s talk about it. Are you ready to listen to potentially divergent views and perspectives? What conditions create a favorable atmosphere for courageous healing conversations. Join Pacem and let’s explore together.

Riverside WRK Group Tour

  • Location: The Warehouse
1121 Thatcher St, Wilmington, DE, 19802
  • Organization(s): WRK Group
  • Inclusion, Public policy

The REACH Riverside Development Corporation was formed in 2017 to remove the barriers to prosperity and well-being facing residents of Wilmington’s Riverside neighborhood, one of Wilmington’s most impoverished communities. In 2018 REACH joined the Purpose Built Communities network and the WRK Group was formed. The WRK Group, a collaboration of three nonprofits working toward the goal of a vibrant Riverside community, is implementing the Purpose Built Communities revitalization model, a holistic approach focused on mixed-income housing, education and health initiatives. The WRK Group leverages the unique assets and expertise of each organization: REACH as community quarterback, leading overall redevelopment strategy and providing administrative and back-office services; Kingswood as a trusted community hub for social service delivery; and The Warehouse as a safe place where teens explore, learn, and develop the skills needed to be successful in school, work, and life. You can get more information on the WRK website here.

Tours start at The Warehouse (1121 Thatcher St in Wilmington) with a quick walkthrough, followed by a full presentation of the project by CEO Logan Herring. Then we jump into the REACH bus and tour the neighborhood, with stops at Kingswood Community Center and Imani Village to see the new housing. They take about 90 minutes.

Peer Support for Returning Citizens

This event will feature the work of New Beginnings-Next Step (NBNS). This non-profit fights recidivism in Delaware by sponsoring weekly peer-support groups for incarcerated and returning citizens. Proving that people change primarily because of relationships, NBNS establishes a deep sense of kinship and trust with and among participating offenders while they are still in prison. These relationships continue long after NBNS members are released and help them build the resilience necessary to deal with the many daunting challenges of reentry successfully. NBNS Executive Director John Flynn, along with returning citizen members and volunteer facilitators, will share how NBNS helps to build an ever-growing community of compassion, hope, and possibility here in Delaware. As John is fond of saying, if we all stand with those in the margins, they won’t be margins anymore. They’ll just be the places where we’re all standing. NBNS was featured in an extensive cover story in the Delaware News Journal on September 22, 2022. See https://newbeginnings-nextstep.org for more information about NBNS.

On-site registration will be available for those who choose not to book/register online.

  • Location: First & Central Presbyterian Church
    1101 N Market St, Wilmington, Delaware, 19801

How can a walk on a labyrinth create peace? And how can a person’s inner peace affect transformation in other aspects of life?

Walking a labyrinth is an active meditation that can help us center ourselves, cultivate peace within, AND learn to act peacefully in our “outer” relationships—with our families, communities, and the world. This year’s theme is We Are One: One Peace, One Week, One Delaware. So, we invite you to join us in this One Peace.

Walk the labyrinth—one step for one moment of peace…

This is an indoor drop-in event.  Please arrive anytime from 12 noon to 6 pm. Our hosts will gladly assist you and explain the labyrinth to new walkers. An adult must accompany children. Finger labyrinths are available for those who cannot walk the Chartres pattern floor labyrinth. Masks are optional.
Please note that you can register for this event on-site when you arrive if you did not register online.

Immigrants and our Youth are part of our greatest opportunity to influence our own perception on how we are doing about our inherent humanity.

Every  action we take or not affects everyone as we get affected by other people’s actions. From people assisting immigrant communities, homelessness, working for equity and creating innovation in education,  supporting local efforts adds to a mindset for peace, unity, and community development.

All welcome, we will feature a musical video from a local artist reflecting back some important realities.

There will be a little workshop at the end of how to be involved to create change at our own peace and with our own capacities.

Come watch and discuss an important documentary called Seeking Asylum: A Mother’s Journey. This film is an award-winning feature documentary that bears witness to the endless deterrents migrants face when petitioning for asylum in the United States. In a dismantled system that has been designed for failure, we follow one woman’s journey as she searches for protection for her and kids. Most people seeking asylum are running from extreme violence in their home countries.

Unfortunately, many view getting to the U.S. as the final hurdle of the migration journey, but we quickly learn that once in the U.S. the fight has just begun.

We will discuss the themes of the film as well as ways to support our own neighbors who are seeking asylum.
